Does the Atkins Diet Work for People Who Want to Lose Weight?


More than 50 percent of the adults in America are overweight. These individuals try many different diets to lose weight. One of the most popular high protein diets is the Atkins diet.
The Atkins diet is designed to allow easy weight loss by limiting foods high in carbohydrates and eating high protein foods. The higher levels of protein allow a person's blood sugar to remain at a stable level, which helps to control the appetite. On the Atkins diet, carbohydrates are limited to 15 to 60 grams per day. This puts the body into ketosis. The process of ketosis causes stored body fat to be burned by the body. When the body breaks down fat by ketosis, appetite is naturally controlled.

The high protein of the Atkins diet also helps to reduce food cravings. The diet leaves you more satisfied and less hungry. When a person keeps their carbohydrate intake low, their blood sugar levels remain constant. This also helps to reduce carbohydrate cravings and hunger pangs.
The Atkins diet consists of four different phases. The first phase is call induction. This is the strictest phase of the diet. During induction, you are limited to 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. During this phase of the diet, you can consume no fruit, grains, starchy vegetables or grains. The only dairy products that are allowed are cream, cheese and butter. You are allowed unlimited protein and fat and up to 20 grams of non-starchy vegetables. It is not uncommon to lose 5 pounds or more per week while you are following the induction phase. When you finish induction, you move on to the ongoing weight loss stage. You then go to the pre-maintenance stage and then finally to the maintenance stage. At each stage, more carbohydrates are added back into the diet. Throughout all of the stages, you continue to consume high levels of protein.
If one follows the stages and sticks to the high protein diet, you will lose weight, even though you are eating rich fatty foods. One study showed that most people lose between ten and thirty pounds during their first month on the Atkins diet. Over forty percent of dieters stated that the Atkins diet was controlling their cravings. More than 50 percent of the people on the Atkins diet stated that their energy levels remained high.
The Insanity Nutrition Guide recommends a high protein diet. This type of diet also offers many benefits other than weight loss. Blood pressure and cholesterol levels may improve. Depression, irritability and fatigue may get better while on the Atkins diet. You may notice fewer muscle and joint pains. Your sleep may improve because your blood sugar level remains constant.
Many people will benefit from eating a high protein diet. It will help to curb cravings and help you to lose weight and there are no restrictions on the foods that you are allowed to eat on the diet. You will lose weight while you eat unlimited amounts of meat, cheese, butter, and cream.
